Notes for Joseph IRWIN

Joseph and Mary ran away from school to get married, making Josephs parents hostile and would not help the couple in any way. Soon after the birth of their son, James, Joseph came to Canada , to Bytown (now Ottawa). He worked on the Rideau Canal, saving money to bring his family over. He received a small tract of land where the Parliament buildings now stand. in 1829, Joseph and Mary, with son James, took a canoe 30 miles up the Gatineau River to settle at the mouth of the Lapeche creek and founded the town of Wakefield. In 1842, as squatters , they occupied 50 acres. In 1847 they received a grant of 128 acres on the Gatineau and Lapeche rivers. This was originally called Irwin Settlement, now called Masham. They built and lived there in a single story log house.

Buried - Irwin Cemetary, Masham, Quebec, Lot 31-R6, Range 7.
